The spires, bell towers and roof lines of sacred architecture often echo the peaks of notable mountains here in the East Kootenays of British Columbia. The applied geometric divisions attempt to hint at an even larger and purer reality just beyond one's grasp.

Having studied the Italian Renaissance, it was not until I traveled to Italy that I experienced the "humanistic proportions" of Roman Classical buildings. The simple, bold shapes and proportions could really be felt. I clearly remember painting these little studies, seated on a sidewalk curb or atop a hotel terrace.

During our recent, May 2024, trip to the Umbrian District of Italy, we stayed in Perugia. I almost completed a little 5" x 7" sketchbook with watercolour paintings during several mornings of painting "en plein air".
